Casein - The Material - There is a lot of myistique surrounding the material Casein, with many people
confusing it with cellulose. However, our casein is made purely from milk curd and whey mixed with rennet, a truly
natural biodegradable material.
The milk curdand whey is dried, ground down, pressed into slabs and dyed a solid color. Next the material is nibbed,
which involves small slices of nib shaped pieces, up to ten of each color, being sliced together to make the final slab,
achieving the special effects required for the stunning Conway Stewart ranges.
At one millimeter per week, it takes over 20 weeks to lay down enough casein for one
pen, wih a further 3 months of drying time to achieve the 6% moisture content.
Casein is a living material, it contains a warmth rather than the cold of plastics, and feels differently on
a warm day to a cold day due to the varying levels of moisture in the material and its environment.
A quirk that cannot be imitated, only enjoyed.
