The Longitude Collection
On top of The Royal Observatory is Greenwich, England a mast was built on which was placed a moveable red ball- the time ball.
At 13:00 exactly, the ball was lowered and so provide a signal, both for the mariners anchored at Greenwich and to those on land. It continues to rise and fall to this very day.
