1992 is the year in which
we witnessed the unification of Europe. It represents a unique
moment in history which will call upon the special qualities
and strengths of each participating nation. These strengths
will in turn be used to create a solid base on which to build
an enlightened Europe and serve as a positive example for the
rest of the world.
OMAS is commemorating this
extraordinary historical event, Europe's unification which was
ratified by the signing of the Maastricht Economical Treaty
on February 7, 1992, by the creation of a prestigious fountain
pen. This pen, the first of the new Europa Collection, has been
produced with the endorsement of the European Communities Commission,
dated December 23, 1991 Prot. N. 25065, and signed by the Secretary
General.
The OMAS Europa has great
symbolic significance because the first 12 pens were presented
to the Heads of State who signed the Maastricht economical Treaty.
Created ou of vegetal resin in the same color as the EEC flag,
its faceted design features a rolled gold band engraved with
12 small stars (one per facet) symbolizing each of the participating
countries. This band is complemented by two slender bands in
white rolled gold. The 18kt. gold and platinum inlaid calligraphic
nib complete the harmonious use of fine metals throughout the
pen. Of course being a fine OMAS writing instrument, this fountain
pen has trouble-free piston system. The aesthetic and symbolic
value of this pen is represented by the placement of a small
diamond set in the star under the clip. A unique box has been
designed and executed to house this extraordinary creation.
In fact it has been created
in perspex and its futuristic design has been chosen to symbolically
interpret the historic-evolutive meaning of this special moment
which will usher us into the third millenium. This is a technological
era which finds all of Europe joined in a common effort to achieve
the most idealogical goals. Just like the writing instrument
it contains, the box serves to synthesize both the aesthetical
& technologibal aspects of its contents. In fact the reflections
& transparencies evoke the mood of the seas and rivers as
we would ideally have them...beautiful and clean.
The reflections which are
the same blue as the fountain pen symbolize the beautiful skies
of the old continent while the golden hinges typify the careful
attention given to details always equated with European culture.
OMAS takes the liberty to
proudly affirm that the OMAS Europa represents the total sublimation
of aesthetical refinement.
The OMAS Europa will only
be produced as part of a world-wide limited edition of 3,500
pieces in 1992 and will be progressively numbered.
