This poetic masterpiece is well known throughout the world and is so familiar to Visconti, as its author, Dante Alighieri, was born, lived and worked in Florence, Italy. The focus of thie psn is its body with scrimshaw perfectly executed by our artists. A scrimshaw is the old art of hand cutting ivory and filling the engraved area with a special ink. The design represents scenes from Dante's journey into Hell and Purgatory. The cap symbolizes Paradise with its angel-shaped clip and delicate ornaments. The Divine Comedy is a poem in "terza rima" of eleven syllables divided into three "Cantiche" - Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise. Each one has thirty-three Cantos except the first, which has thirty-four, including the prologue. The poem is about he drama of a sould describing the spirit after death, as Dante himself explains to Cangrande Della Scala. It is an allegory about the human spirit, which, depending on the actions taken during one's lifetime, will earn a rewward or suffer the consequences after death.

Dante started the "Divine Comedy" in 1306 and finished it at the end of his life in 1321. The Comedy introduced anohter concept in literature: a didactic allegoric poem. The three reigns are the allegory of the structure of the world. The law of the retaliation (contrappasso) is employed to highlight by analogy the faults and the sins not only of the characters themselves but also of the people they represent.
